A Foreword From Mrs Parpworth

Dear Parents,

Well done to Year 6 and 8 for completing some very important exams last week.  The children in Year 6 were treated to some time away from school on Friday with a trip to Elev8, lunch at the beach and a game of mini-golf – fully deserved!

Mrs Harries and Mr Buss visited our school last Wednesday and they both commented on how warm, happy and friendly our school feels.  They toured the site and visited each class noticing how polite and well mannered the children are.  Mrs Harries will be visiting each week in readiness for September and we would like to invite you to a coffee morning on Wednesday 5th June, in the Dining Hall, where you will have the opportunity to meet her.

You may have noticed that we have taken on board ideas to create an additional pedestrian pathway leading towards Junior House.  This roped off area will enable much safer passage around the car park area so please use this if you are walking into school.

We received some very exciting news last week that we have officially been granted ‘Plastic Free’ school status.  Thank you to Mrs Sabin Dawson for all her hard work in educating our children to champion change.  Through their efforts, we have committed to making sustained improvements across the school, therefore reducing plastic usage.

Finally, it is with great sadness that I announce the departure of Mrs Crine in a few weeks’ time. Mrs Crine will leave Wellesley Haddon Dene on Friday 7th June and will begin a new career at Network Rail.  It goes without saying that Mrs Crine has been a fundamental part of the team for nearly five years.  She has been an incredible source of support to me and a dear friend.  She has worked tirelessly to build a robust, efficient and friendly office which is the heart of our school.  I want thank Mrs Crine for all her hard work, care, focus and dedication.  We will miss her vibrant and professional presence in the office and I am sure you will join me in wishing Mrs Crine all the very best for her future career.

I wish you all a wonderful half term break.  We look forward to welcoming our boarders back on Sunday 2nd June and day students on Monday 3rd June.

Mrs Jo Parpworth

Eco Shop Update

We held two business meetings last week where we prepared our new premises for Top Up Shop (Sports Hall hatch) and we finalised our logo.  Well done to Brooke in Year 6 and Wilbur in Year 8 whose artwork was selected and combined into our finalised logo.

Please see below for more information about our grand unveiling on the 24th May at 3.30pm.

    Year 2 Dover Museum Trip

Year 2 had a great time visiting Dover museum, linked to their topic of the bronze and iron age period! They started the day with the bronze age boat workshop where they saw a real life bronze age boat that was discovered in Dover 30 years ago, they were told that it is likely 3600 years old! The children created their very own replica bronze age boat equipped with supplies, which they will bring home later in the term.

The children thoroughly enjoyed getting hands-on in the artefact investigation workshop where they were challenged with thinking about what each artefact was and what its purpose was, they then reenacted a story using all that they had learnt.

It was a fantastic opportunity to consolidate all of the learning they have been up to this term!

      Exams Last Week

      Year 6 SATs

Well done to everyone in Year 6 for their effort and conduct last week during intense SATs week.  They applied themselves with determination and focus.  We look forward to receiving the results in early July.  Thank you to all teachers who have prepared our children over the years for these important exams

CE French Listening / Speaking Exams

Year 8 seemed very buoyant after their CE French exams last week.  Everyone felt the exam was fair and accessible.  Thank you to Madame Ryder and Dr May for preparing the children.

      Digital Marketing and Careers Presentation

Thank you to Emma Frewin, one of our parents, for delivering a very informative careers talk to Years 5-8.   During the presentation the children were introduced to Digital Marketing as a career and the qualifications you may need.  Emma spoke about what Digital Marketing was and the different aspects of the job.  The children asked some great questions at the end of the session and were really interested in the direction a career can take in that industry and what they needed to start a business of their own.

      Pottery Club

The children have put in such a great effort in pottery this week!  They created whales and tree luminaries! Their creative minds processed ideas very quickly to come up with such interesting concepts.  Whales with their babies attached, crazy fish from the depths of the ocean and trees with huge witchy noses and fantastic textures! Thank you to Mrs Kelly for this wonderful club, giving the children an opportunity to express their most creative sides!

      Beach School

Reception class went to Dumpton Gap beach on Friday as it was low tide so the children enjoyed the rock pools in the sun. Sean very kindly bought us all an ice lolly at the end from Bayside Cafe and the children were delighted. Thank you! Also, a big thank you to the owners (Élodie’s parents in Year 4) who looked after us and gave the children some sticks of rock to take back to school to share. Every beach offers something different and the children found some crabs, cuttlefish, anemones and shells. We had the litter picks too but there wasn’t as much to pick at this beach, which was good news! We will definitely go back to this one soon!
