Forest School
Inspiring Learning in the Heart of Nature
At Wellesley Haddon Denes Forest School, we are proud to offer a unique outdoor learning experience that connects children with the natural world. Our recently developed outdoor learning space is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and education. Built using a range of recycled and sustainable materials, this space provides an inspiring environment where young minds can thrive.
Recognised Excellence
Our dedication to environmental stewardship has earned us a Distinction in the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag. This achievement reflects our school’s unwavering commitment to creating a sustainable future.
A Space to Grow and Explore
Our outdoor learning area is a hub of activity, designed to create and develop curiosity and creativity. Here, children have the opportunity to grow vegetables, herbs, and plants that attract bees and butterflies. The area is also home to bee and bug hotels, a hedgehog house, and a secret fairy garden—a tranquil spot where children can immerse themselves in reading and reflection.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Our teachers utilise this outdoor environment to deliver a wide range of lessons across various subjects, including:
- Science: Hands-on exploration of plant life cycles, pollination, and wildlife habitats.
- Literacy: Creative writing and storytelling inspired by nature.
- Art: Nature-inspired crafts and sketches.
- PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education): encouraging teamwork, mindfulness, and environmental responsibility.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Our efforts extend beyond education. We are proud of our eco-initiatives, which include:
- Producing Honey: We are fortunate to have an apiary on-site, where bees provide us with fresh honey which we also sell, offering students a first-hand understanding of beekeeping and pollination.
- Wildflower Area and Mini Pond: A vibrant ecosystem where children can observe wildlife in its natural habitat.
- BioBlitz Events: Interactive surveys to catalog species in our school grounds, promoting biodiversity awareness.
- Plastic-Free Initiatives: We collaborate with ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ to reduce plastic waste. Children craft plastic-free gifts for Mother’s Day and other occasions.
- Elderflower Cordial: Elderflowers picked from our grounds are transformed into delicious cordial, sold at our Top-Up Shop to support eco-projects.
Bringing Nature Into the Classroom
Nature is woven into every aspect of our learning. Whether it’s using natural materials for crafts or incorporating outdoor observations into lessons, we ensure that students gain a deep appreciation for the environment.
