Easter Holiday Cricket Coaching

The Wellesley Haddon Dene Easter Holiday Cricket Coaching course will take place this year from Wednesday 17th to Thursday 18th April, under the guidance of Mr Franklin and Mr Burleigh. Friends of Wellesley Quiz Night

The annual Friends of Wellesley Quiz Night takes place on Saturday 23rd March, from 7.00 p.m. Parents should have received an invitation; if you would like further information, please contact Belinda Wakeling at belindawakeling@hotmail.com.

Red Nose Day, Friday 15th March

As a school we will be supporting Comic Relief this year for Red Nose Day on the 15th March. Children are welcome to attend school in their home clothes for a donation of £1 which can be added to the school bill. Red noses and comic relief wristbands will be available to purchase on the day at a cost of £1.25 which can be added to the school bill. Please contact the school office if you would rather your child did not purchase a red nose or a wristband. Many thanks in advance for your support.

Boarding Event – Tonbridge and Benenden Schools

On Monday 13th May, Tonbridge and Benenden will be holding a combined event in London which may be of interest to you. The occasion, entitled “Boarding: Meeting the Challenges of the Teenage Years” will be led by James Priory, the Headmaster at Tonbridge, and Mrs Samantha Price, the Headmistress at Benenden, with contributions from housemasters, housemistresses, parents and pupils from their two schools. Their hope is that the evening will help parents to understand better the ethos which allows pupils to flourish as boarders in their schools during their teenage years.

Benenden will also be represented at the GSA ‘Open Your Eyes to Boarding’ event on Thursday 2nd May at St Matthew’s Church, Bayswater, London W2 4LA.

This is an event which provides ‘an opportunity to discover what modern boarding has to offer your daughter.’  You will also be able to meet top girls’ school Heads and staff and to take part in a Q & A session with a panel of experts.

School Last Week

Thanet Music and Drama Festival

Well done to all those who took part in the Thanet Festival.  Sue Flory, our LAMDA teacher, writes:

Fifteen pupils took part in this year’s festival which took place in Broadstairs between 1st and 3rd March.  The festival offers many classes and this year our pupils entered Poetry Recital, Prose Reading, Mime and Duologue classes.  I am very proud of the hard work, improvement and performances that all our pupils achieved; the results for our entrants were as follows:

Science and Engineering Challenge

Four members of Block 4 went to St Lawrence College on Wednesday for the Thanet Science and Engineering Challenge, where they took part in an enjoyable and educational series of activities and challenges.

World Book Day

Wellesley celebrated World Book Day on Thursday.  Staff were given a flyer on which to fill in what they are currently reading and asked to recommend a book.  Meanwhile the children were given opportunities in their English lessons to share stories and read extracts from their favourite books.  They were also given a book token to take to a bookseller and swap for one of the twelve World Book Day books.

School This Week

Exams and Parent/Teacher Meeting

Block 1 children have their final set of practice examinations this week before scholarships in and early May, and Common Entrance in early June. There will be a parent/teacher meeting for Block 1 parents in the Sports Hall on Saturday 16th March at 9.10 am, prior to the Lenten Service and the Denne Hill Cross-Country event. Block 1 pupils are invited to join their parents for the meeting although some will need to leave slightly early for choir practice.

Lenten Service

Our Lenten Service takes place on Saturday morning.  Please note the start time of 11.10 am.  We shall be welcoming Stephen Cave, who is a minister at Queens Road Baptist Church in Broadstairs and who is part of the Gap Project based at the church: we look forward to hearing him address the school.  Parents and families are warmly invited to attend.  Soup and sandwiches will be served after the service, prior to departure for the Denne Hill cross-country race, so do please contact the office if you are planning to join us, so that we can make the necessary catering arrangements.

Denne Hill

On Saturday afternoon we head once again to Denne Hill Farm for our annual cross-country race, courtesy of the Loder-Symonds family. With the majority of the school running, this is always a big event, so please do come and support the children.  The race begins at 3.00 pm.

Scholarship Success

We are delighted to announce three further awards across a range of disciplines.  Toni Alaka has gained an Academic Scholarship to Harrow, Gigi Dunbar Johnson has been chosen for the top Sports Scholarship at Worth and Jessica Zhang has been awarded an Art Exhibition at Downe House.  Very many congratulations to all three for their fine achievements.

Litter Angels

We are delighted to announce that Margot Grand is Thanet’s overall winner for the Litter Angels poster competition.  When the initial competition took place last term, Margot’s poster was the winner for Wellesley and went on to the Thanet-wide competition.  She has now been judged in top place and her winning poster will displayed in McDonald’s car parks across Thanet. Local MPs Craig Mackinlay and Sir Roger Gale will present Margot with her award at McDonald’s on Friday.  Well done, Margot.

SATIPS General Knowledge Quiz

Congratulations to Toni Alaka on his performance in the SATIPS General Knowledge Quiz (The Challenge).  Out of over 2500 entries across the country he finished in 11th place, the best result for a Wellesley pupil in the Senior competition for many years.

Music

Well done to Poppy Brooke Turner.  It was announced in Tuesday’s Assembly that she has been invited to make her solo debut in Mendelsohn’s ‘Elijah’ with the Deal and Walmer Handelian Choral Society on 27th April. 

Poetry Recitations

Well done to Georgie Carter who, as JS winner, stood up in front of the school in Tuesday’s Assembly to read a report on the Junior House Poetry Recitations.  Other results can be seen in last week’s Wellesley Weekly.

Thanet Music and Drama Festival

Henry Barker and Archie Butterfill performed their winning Duologue, an extract from Blackadder, in Tuesday’s Assembly.  Well done, Henry and Archie, on a very amusing performance.

Scientist of the Month

Mr Waldie announced The Scientist of the Month for February in Tuesday’s Assembly.  Well done to Abe Olson for working hard to improve his knowledge of chemical elements and the Periodic Table.

British Science Week

This week is British Science Week and the children are taking part in a wide variety of activities throughout the week. The main theme this year is Journeys, and there is a competition to design a poster which can be about anything involving journeys. British Science Week is also partnering with Operation Weather Rescue, with the aim of recording data from old weather reports, from 1860 to 1880; this will lead to a better understanding of the climate from the past, while examining storms and unusual weather events will provide a baseline to help monitor climate change. We welcome Hilderstone Radio Club on Friday: they will be helping groups of children to build radio sets. There will also be a challenge on Friday, using sports science to improve basketball skills. A daily quiz is running all week, with questions posted around the school, and many children have been seen walking around and filling in their answers. Many thanks to Miss Wallace and Mr Waldie for all their work in preparing these activities.

Team of the Week

The ‘Team of the Week’ for this week are all the Junior House members who took part in the Junior House Poetry Recitations.  They will be rewarded with cookies and squash in the Headmaster’s drawing room during a morning break.

Play Rehearsals

Final preparations are under way for the Middle School play.  Further rehearsals take place throughout this week and next, with the Technical Rehearsal taking place next week on Thursday afternoon, and the Dress Rehearsal the following afternoon.

Netball

The girls have a further netball tournament this week.  On Wednesday we host our annual Under 11 tournament, with eight teams taking part; please note that the tournament begins at 1.30 pm.  Good luck to our team.

Sunday Outings

This Sunday a group from Blocks 1 and 2 will be heading to Greenfields for a morning of clay-pigeon shooting.  In the afternoon there will be a trip into Margate to Lost Island Adventure Indoor Golf.
