From the Heads

Welcome back to the final weeks of this academic year. We hope that you enjoyed your half term and that you managed to take advantage of the brief glimmers of sunshine we had.

We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the tremendous successes of those who have achieved scholarships this year. Congratulations to Thomas Spanton and Teegan Pretzlik (Sports Excellence Programme to The King’s School, Canterbury); Reuben Carss (Sport Scholarship to Sedbergh); Raf Cable and Georgie Carter (Drama Exhibitions to The King’s School, Canterbury); Raf Cable (Academic Scholarship to The King’s School, Canterbury); Max Miller (Academic Scholarship to Brighton College); Mirabel Poulson (Art Scholarship to Sevenoaks) and Grace Flowers (Academic Scholarship to Sevenoaks). These awards are testament to the hard work of the students and dedication of our staff, a truly remarkable achievement.

Furthermore, as Common Entrance is upon us, we wish all of our Year 8 pupils the very best in all of their examinations this week.

Year 5 Assembly

We were delighted that Mr Garner was able to join Year 5 for their class assembly on Tuesday before half term. Mr Garner is a councillor on Thanet District Council and he was able to tell the pupils of a few of the measures that the council are putting in place to make our local area more environmentally friendly. Year 5 explained to the rest of the school what the Kent Wildlife Trusts ‘Wilder School Award’ is (we were awarded a bronze award last year) and what we are doing as a school in the hope of achieving it again this year.

Thanet Schools Young Artists Festival

During Half Term 19 WHD students had artwork chosen to be exhibited as part of the Thanet Schools Young Artists Festival in Margate. It’s a big exhibition with 39 schools and around 750 pupils taking part. We had pupils from the pre-prep, middle school and seniors taking part and so were able to demonstrate, to all visitors and judges, the depth of talent we have within our school. Being represented at such a large community event is important, but to come away with three first prizes and a further four commendations is tremendous. Well done to everyone involved with a special mention to Oliver Eve (Year 3), Grace Flowers and Max Miller (both Year 8) who have all won first 1st place in their age groups! Lila Grady and Felix Butterfill (both Year 7) alongside Raf Cable and Sunny Zhao (both Year 8) have all won a commendation within their age group.

Common Entrance

As we type, the vast majority of our Year 8 pupils are heads down in their final moments of preparation and revision for their Common Entrance examinations, which begin on Tuesday, in the Old Hall. So much has been debated about the future of Common Entrance and indeed, the value of terminal assessments, such as these, GCSEs and A Levels. No matter what the opinion on this, and there are valid arguments on both sides, there are inevitable positives to the experiences of preparing for and sitting tests and exams, for example, the ability for an individual to “manage” their emotions, expectations and feelings throughout a period of “pressure”. Building character and resilience have always been (and will always be) an essential part of our aims here at WHD. In the meantime, we wish all of our Year 8 pupils the very best for their exams and hope that they grow and learn as a result of the process.

Works to the front of the School

As you will have no doubt noticed, works to improve the parking at the front of the school are well under way. Please do take care when driving in and out of our grounds and likewise, if walking with your children at the front of the school, please take extra care as there are works vehicles on both the front lawn and around the squareabout. Thank you.

Team of the Week

Each week, a group of pupils who have contributed positively to live at our school are awarded Team of the Week. This week, as a result of their sustained efforts and approach to all lessons, games and activities, Team of the Week is Form 5E. They will enjoy cookies and squash with Mr and Mrs Franklin during a break time.

Parents Festival of Cricket (Year 5 – Year 8)

After the roaring success of last summer’s “festival of cricket” on our playing fields, we write to ascertain interest in parents having a go at some cricket – in the form of an old fashioned parents v pupils fixture – on Saturday 24th June.

Year 5 & 6 fixtures will take place on Saturday morning between 9am and 11am

Year 7 & 8 fixtures will take place on Saturday afternoon between 1pm and 5pm.

It will be a very relaxed day, with (providing parents are keen to play against their children) a number of fixtures (hard or soft ball as appropriate) taking place on our glorious playing fields.

Please can we ask that you complete this brief form stating your interest to play? Please note we encourage ALL levels of cricketers and always recognise effort and sportsmanship over skill!

Year 5 & 6 parents, please complete this form

Year 7 & 8 parents, please complete this form
